The I.S.S. National Laboratory Wants Your Materials and Manufacturing Projects

by Rae Beyer

The International Space Station (I.S.S.) National Laboratory wants your advanced materials and manufacturing projects. It is currently soliciting flight projects for in-space production applications to advance applications that can bring value to humanity and enable business models in space.

In-space production applications are a strategic focus area for the I.S.S. National Lab. They are looking for projects demonstrating space-based manufacturing and production activities that enable new business growth and capital investment, represent scalable and sustainable market opportunities, and produce recurring value with the potential to generate demand for and revenue from access to space. The crew aboard the I.S.S. will develop, test, or mature products and processes. Flight projects selected via this solicitation may receive funding to support project development, mission integration, and operations for research implemented on the I.S.S.

One example of a project awarded through an I.S.S. National Lab research announcement in the area of in-space production applications is LambdaVision. The biotech company has launched multiple projects to the space station over the years to improve the manufacturing process for a protein-based artificial retina.

Applicants must follow a two-step proposal submission process. Interested parties must submit a Concept Summary for review. The I.S.S. National Lab will invite chosen applicants to send them a full proposal.

The I.S.S. National Lab will host a webinar on February 23, 2023, at 2 p.m. EDT to discuss I.S.S. facilities and capabilities associated with this research announcement. A recording of the webinar will be made available to the research community through the research announcement webpage.

Applicants must submit Concept Summaries by the end of the day on April 5, 2023. Step 2: Full Proposals (from those invited to present them) will be due by the end of the day on June 19, 2023.

Please visit the research announcement webpage to learn more about this opportunity, including how to submit a Step 1: Concept Summary. To learn more about the I.S.S. National Lab and the science that it sponsors, please visit their website.
