Early Container Return Program Helps Shippers Offset Carbon Footprint

by admin

The CMA CGM Group announced the launch of TEUs to Trees, an early container return incentive program meant to increase climate change mitigation without disrupting supply chain fluidity and velocity. They have pledged to be carbon neutral by 2050.

The program rewards customers for doing their part to increase equipment availability and offset their carbon footprint. CMA CGM will purchase carbon credits for its customers for U.S. forestry expansion, support urban resilience projects in vulnerable communities, and drive the creation of additional offset programs. The company also hopes it will encourage its partners to move forward with them toward more sustainable shipping.

To increase their impact, the program will cover refrigerated and dry containers and every U.S. ocean terminal where they receive empty containers. CMA CGM will provide credits to customers that return dry and refrigerated containers to company-approved return locations in port cities throughout the U.S. (rail ramps not included). Customers will receive 2.5 tons of carbon credits per container returned during calendar days 1-4.

The program will run from October through December 2022.
